IFEAT (International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades) brings together producers, buyers, researchers, and innovators in the flavor and fragrance sectors. With over 700 member organizations across 66 countries, IFEAT is a key platform for discussing regulatory challenges, sustainability in supply chains, and scientific innovation in aroma ingredient manufacturing. Olefin metathesis in fragrance synthesis
Olefin metathesis—particularly ring-closing metathesis (RCM)—has become an important tool in the synthesis of macrocyclic musk compounds such as civetone, muscone, exaltolide, and yuzu lactone. These structures are traditionally challenging to access but are highly valued for their sensory qualities. Using metathesis allows chemists to simplify synthetic routes, reduce waste, and improve selectivity and overall process efficiency.
